Ancient Greeks cultivated olive trees and extracted oil some thousand years before Christ. They appreciated its nutritional value but also used it in other expressions of their daily life.
Used in religious rituals, medicine, for cosmetic reasons, as fuel and even rubbing it on their bodies before taking part in sports or the battle, olive oil was an integral part of their life.
It was such the significance of the olive tree for the ancient Greeks, that it comes as no surprise it represented goddess Athena, the founder of Athens, was the symbol of Hercules, the epic super hero of antiquity, was referred to as “liquid gold” by Homer, and was the plant from which laurels were made.
